Contemporary Nursing Practice: The Evolution of Nursing Practice through Educational Change The practice of nursing has undergone many changes through the ages. From biblical times to today, men and women have cared for the sick and dying within their communities. Men were often considered the first nurses as females were not suitable in knowledge for this. As time passed, the poor and under privileged females began to care for the sick. This was viewed in a negative light as these women were considered prostitutes or witches. The view of only men having the knowledge to care for the sick greatly changed during the Crimean War when Florence Nightingale developed the first nursing model and showed that women were able to give knowledgeable nursing care. The nursing model developed by Nightingale began the foundation on which current nursing theories and conceptual models are based.
