Week 3 - Dental
Hypersensitivity
Definition
'excessive' sensitivity and/or tooth pain
Characterized: short, sharp pain, arising from exposed dentin that
occurs in response to "stimuli"
Stimuli
temperature (hot or cold)
evaporative
tactile
osmotic
chemical
Characteristics of dentin
Dentinal tubules open to the oral cavity
large & numerous dentinal tubules
thin, poorly calcified, or breached smear layer
Week 3 - Dental Hypersensitivity 1
, Smear layer
A deposit of salivary proteins, debris from dentifrices and/or other
calcified matter that occludes dentinal tubules
Non-sensitive dentin
fewer dentinal tubules at tooth surface are present than in sensitive
dentin
Either a smear layer is present or tubules are occluded by mineral
compounds
Factors contributing to dentinal hypersensitivity
