PSY 520 - Topic 1- 8 DQ-1&2/PSY 520 - Topic 1- 8 DQ-1&2. Topic 1 DQ 1 Review the levels of measurement terms in the Statistics Visual Learner media piece. Compare and contrast Stevens's four scales of measurement, and explain when each type of scale should be used. The four levels of measurement that were first proposed by S. S. Stevens are nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio types of data. Nominal scales, which are also referred to as classificatory scales, use numbers, labels, or other symbols to simply classify a person, object, or characteristic. This level of measurement characterizes variables that are categorical in nature (Miller & Salkind, 2002). Ordinal scales, or ranking scales, use a level of measurement where objects in numerous categories of a scale stand in some kind of relation to the categories. Given a group of equivalence classes, if the relation greater than holds between some but not all pairs of classes, we have a partially ordered scale. If the relation greater than holds for all pairs of classes so that a complete rank ordering of classes arises, we have an ordinal scale (Miller & Salkind, 2002).
