The organisation operate in a competitive environment and management is supposed to
come up with strategies that can give the organisation a competitive advantage. The
management have to understand the industry they are operating in before making any
strategy. It is important to assess and evaluate the competitive strength and position of
a business organisation. Porter have provided the five forces of competitive analysis
that can be used to assess and evaluate competitive strength and position of a business
organisation.
These useful five forces are discussed in detail in this paper. The paper will also discuss
the framework or tool that can be used to analyse the remote environment which is
PESTEL. The paper will further look into the VRIO acronym and explain in relation with
the given case study. The paper will also explain the capabilities of the City Lodge hotel
Group. The paper will finally look into the various business-level strategies for creating
and sustaining competitive advantage using the five brands of City Lodge Hotel Group.

Porter's Five Forces of Competitive Position Analysis were developed in 1979 by
Michael E Porter of Harvard Business School as a simple framework for assessing and
evaluating the competitive strength and position of a business organisation. This theory
is based on the concept that there are five forces that determine the competitive
intensity and attractiveness of a market. Porter’s five forces help to identify where power
lies in a business situation. This is useful both in understanding the strength of an
organisation’s current competitive position, and the strength of a position that an
organisation may look to move into. Strategic analysts often use Porter’s five forces to
understand whether new products or are potentially profitable. By understanding where
power lies, the theory can also be used to identify areas of strength, to improve
