Every individual has their challenges based on what their strengths and weaknesses are, but within health
and social care, key professionals must be able to use strategies and effective communication to guarantee
service users are being looked after. There are numerous different types of challenges the service users are
faced with, including practical, communication and belief challenges. Nusrat has communication challenges
as she has learning difficulties and is unable to communicate her thoughts and ideas vocally, therefore, she
uses a Makaton grid and gestures to ensure she can communicate effectively. Additionally, Martin may have
belief or morale challenges due to his recent redundancy making him lose self-confidence, in turn, this can
dramatically reduce is self-esteem and self-worth, leading to long term health problems, such as anxiety.
Finally, Brenda may have some practical challenges, making it hard for her to do certain tasks, as an example
she may be unable to cook food on her own because, due to her mental health issues, she might make her
forget about some tasks, including turning the oven off.


There are additional challenges other service users can face such as awareness, skills, acceptance and
motivational challenges. Awareness challenges could include elderly service users who are unaware of
financial aids to help them move into a care home, whereas motivational challenges are may include a
service user with type 2 diabetes and who is morbidly obese as they may not have the motivation to improve
their health and their quality of life. Finally, practical challenges could include service users with Huntington’s
