Health and safety in science organisations
Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application
A: Understand the importance of health and safety in scientific organisations.
In this assignment I will be writing about how different departments follow health and safety
legislations, hazards present in the facility and how health and safety is managed. I will specifically
be looking at new city college science department.
Both of these colleges provide students with equipment and recourses all that need to be carefully
used and handled. Different legislations are used for different departments. The main reason for
legislation on health and safety is to protect employees and those affected by work. Laws cover
every aspect of our lives, including safeguarding the health and safety of employees and those
affected by work including those receiving assistance and assistance.
Health and safety at scientific organisation:
Electrical hazards.
Working at height.
noise
Lone working.
Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) sites.
Vehicles.
Sensitizers.
Explosive atmospheres.
Accidents can occur. But when accidents happen, a proper procedure is taken to resolve the issue.
Accidents are a common aspect of human experience and result in large numbers of people every
year being injured or permanently disabled in the world. Unintentional events, typically sudden
occurrences, accidents, and injuries, losses or harm associated. We have seen or experienced some
kind of injury, e.g., someone hitting the corridor. Think of other incidents that you saw or heard of.
There are also many accidents involving property damage or loss.
In new city college there is a health and safety legislation and practical chemistry in teaching schools.
This essential states how chemistry should be taught safely whilst using equipment. Legislations and
regulations are relevant to the origination.

Chemistry
1. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
2. personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992
3. labelling and packaging regulations 2011
4. classification labelling and packaging regulation 2009
5. reporting of injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 2013
6. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
7. control of major accident hazards regulations (COMAH) 2015
8. electrical hazards legislation and regulations 1989
9. Display Screen Equipment 1992
10.Use and control of hazardous substances (COSHH) 2002
These are all legislations which are used and are very important. These rules need to be followed.
Which legislations are relevant to the department and why are they used:
New city college science department uses the following legislations.
1. Use and control of hazardous substances (COSHH) 2002
2. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
3. personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992
4. labelling and packaging regulations 2011
5. classification labelling and packaging regulation 2009
6. reporting of injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 2013
7. Display Screen Equipment 1992
8.Use and control of hazardous substances (COSHH) 2002
Relevant legislation in a science department:
These legislations are all relevant in the science department.
The first legislation is when handling chemicals in a lab. Substances are sometimes easily identified
as harmful. The risks of nanomaterial exposure are currently not fully comprehended as a new
technology. While knowledge gaps exist, HSE recommends a risk management precautionary
approach with control strategies to minimize exposure.
