The rapidness of Lenin’s rule and his actions to setting up policies and decrees
straight after he gained full power, created a positive look on the bolshevik,
increasing and affirming their support. The “peace, bread, land” promise the
bolsheviks had created in their initial grab for power, had gaining them the support
they needed, so the decrees Lenin published afterwards was by means a way of
ensuring that those promises were kept. These decrees included the land decree:
taking the land from the aristocracy, tsar and church to give to the peasants - this
gave him the support of the peasants who had wanted land that the provisional
government didn’t give them - and the Brest Litovsk which declared peace for
Russia with Germany and took Russia out of the war - this was beneficial to every
citizen including the army and soldiers. Additionally his new economic policy was
hugely successful within the lower classes as it meant there was a bigger incentive
to make food and stopped the forced taking of grain that was including within war
communism. It provided more food for the peasants, a chance for them to make
their own money and also increase food production for the whole country. This
further increased the general economy of Russia and thus the welfare of its
citizens. Though the NEP was not communism, the huge benefits it provided,
especially for the huge working percentage of the population, raised Lenin’s
support and helped him in strengthening his rule.

The tactics and violence Lenin used through the red guard could have been the a
very important reason in why Lenin was able to strengthen his control because he
was able to use fear and terror in order to prevent anyone from going against him.
Tactically, the red guard targeted officers and opponents to Lenin which meant
there were very few people in power who had the opportunity to stand against him
and cause another revolution against Lenin. Additionally the actions of the red
guard were efficient in controlling factories, propaganda and big cities where a lot
of production was made, to ensure that everything was in favour of Lenin.
The economic policies that Lenin created were a big part in the reason why he
strengthened his power and rule, however possibly the more important point was
that the red terror were so ruthless as by Lenin’s rule that it instilled the whole
population in fear of going against him, thus preventing any outbreaks against his
methods. Although, without the positives that the economic policies brought,
making benefits in the lives of Lenin’s supporters the red terror alone would have
probably caused outrage within every class, if Lenin had not shown the strength
and ruthlessness through the red guard, he would not have been able to create the
society working towards communism.
