IOP3703 – Assignment 1

Question 1 (Schreuder and Coetzee, 2016)
Work values, like personal values, are concerned with your preferences, goals, and preferred
path. It's critical to think about these principles as you assess your present job satisfaction and
contemplate your future career options.
Advancement – when people value getting ahead and achieving more in their career, they are
motivated by power and status. They have long-term worry about doing things better,
exceeding one's standard of excellence, and striving to do something tough and distinctive is
given more weight to achievement. These individuals are highly concerned about their image
and how they are viewed by others, being successful in their career is very important
 Power – this when individuals have the capability to convince others to act according to
their wishes. Managers are often seen as influential due to their status or ranking, they
can convince those below them especially if they have control over budgets or financial
s of the organisation. People who normally have a scarce skill or intellectual property of
the organization normally have power over those around them or are seen as powerful
as they possess something that not everyone has. The concept of labor has shifted to
include human dignity, liberty, equality, and solidarity. Individuals now own their
professions, which can be characterized in terms of the individual activities that shape
them.
 Status - Work that involves increasing levels of specialized responsibility, such as moving
from a technical to a managerial role, can be meaningful.
Autonomy - Allowing employees to design their work environment so they may perform at
their best is what autonomy entails. Autonomy does not imply working alone, doing whatever
you want whenever you want, or a lack of direction. Trust, respect, reliability, and integrity are
the foundations of an autonomous workplace. Autonomy enthusiasts believe that having some
control over how they organize their life and work is essential. They prefer to work in
circumstances that allow them to explore their professional or technical abilities with the
fewest organizational constraints possible.
Self-actualisation - Employees who feel professionally fulfilled and personally respected, and
who are part of an inclusive organization where they are individually connected to the greater
company mission, are said to be self-actualized. We have basic psychological demands for
personal growth and development throughout our lives as human beings. You can discover
meaning and purpose in your life by achieving self-actualization, and you can honestly say
you've lived. Work loses significance and a genuine part of it is suppressed if a self-concept is
incompatible with the demands of the job.
