Additional needs are categorised into 4 categories based on how severe they are. There are
multiple different types of additional needs such as physical, emotional, cognitive and
learning needs. They are classified as mild, moderate, severe and profound. A mild learning
need is when an individual can communicate with others but cannot understand new
information. These people may need more support in settings when learning and trying to
understand new information. Those with a mild learning disability usually have an IQ around
50-60 or mental age of 9-12. Someone with a moderate learning disability may have basic
communication and those with a moderate physical disability may struggle with day-to-day
activities. Someone with a moderate learning disability may have an IQ around 35-49 or a
mental age of 6-9. Someone with a severe additional need will have serious mental or
physical impairment to the point they may struggle with daily activities. Those with severe
learning disabilities may have little or no speech and need life-long support. People with
profound additional needs have more than one disability, they will have little ability to do
day to day tasks or communicate with others. Those with profound learning difficulties will
have a mental age of less than 3 years old.
