Unit 5 Assignment 2 D2 – International Business – Guidance - D2 RECOMMEND
ONE COUNTRY (CHINA OR IRELAND) THAT JOHN LEWIS COULD
TARGET FOR FUTURE INTERNATIONAL TRADE.

Introduction Writing Frame - answer the following

Explain what you are going to do in this task using the title above

Explain that you are going to carry out a SWOT analysis on your chosen market to
further analyse its suitability as a trading market for John Lewis

Explain that you will make a final recommendation and discuss the factors that will
affect its success in that Market

Section 1 Writing Frame – answer the following

Make a choice of market that YOU think John Lewis should/ could start trading in

Explain what format of trading they should do there – set up a shop/ online etc

What is the PRIMARY (main) reason for this choice? You don’t have to go into
detail here, just briefly explain what was the most important factor you have
learned in analysing China and Ireland and why you think JL is more suited to this
market overall.

Section 2 : GUIDANCE - PESTLE Analysis (This is a big section of your work)

The following is Guidance on how to write this section .

The writing frame for this section is underneath in pink

Here you will be explaining that you have carried out extensive situational analysis
on China and Ireland and that will be using what you learned to help you justify
your reasons for choosing the market you did

For each PESTLE factor you will answer the following:

1) Tell me if it was a strong deciding factor in your decision to locate there

2) Why?

, 3) Compare the advantages of it compared to the disadvantages of the other market

4) Recap 1 or 2 points that you feel will help guarantee the success of JL in that
market as opposed to the other

You must analyse and make a judgement.. Use connectives like

Because… Leading to…. Therefore…. The impact of this is…. Additionally….
The results of this is… I recommend ... I believe…

You will need to recap what you learned in this PESTLE analysis and tell me why
your country is more suitable than the other based on your research. See the
example below as a guide.

The key thing here is expansion of your point using real life examples, data and
explanations

EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH : Political Factors

1)This was a reasonably strong factor in my decision as

2) Both countries are stable politically and there is no real sign of civil unrest
therefore I feel that John Lewis could perform well in both of these countries .

3a )However, looking at other political factors, I felt that Ireland may be a better
match for JL as it has a similar political structure as the UK and UK Government
involvement is less than it would be in China . A key thing I learned was that
Government in China can strongly oppose anything that they see as anti –
communist, this could have an impact on advertising or other factors of operation
for John Lewis.

3b) Another factor against China politically is that I have learned that the
Government can change laws, legislation quite easily with little notice (insert data
here) making long term planning more difficult. I feel that in Ireland they will be
able to conduct business similar to how they do in the UK meaning that they can
start to trade quicker and use already existing methods and resources such as
advertising etc and they will be more familiar with how the country is run

4a) A positive political factor for Ireland was that Ireland encourages Foreign
Investment and has a Corporation Tax of 12.5% , half of China’s Corporation Tax
rate (the UK rate is 19% and the Chinese rate is 25%) this means John Lewis
would be paying less in tax therefore reducing operating costs. 4b)Additionally,
Ireland is part of the World Trade Organisation like the UK so the standards of
Trade will be the same , It is also a part of the United Nations and the Organisation
for Economic Cooperation meaning there are guidelines that it will have to adhere
