Which mechanisms can reduce the impact of communication barriers?


There are many barriers to effective communication however there are also many
mechanisms to reduce these barriers.

Background noise
Background noise can be a communication barrier as it prevents the people
conversing from hearing each other which can lead to misunderstandings. This can
be resolved by simply moving to a less populated area or quiet area such as a
library.

Distractions
Distractions such as mobile phones can be easily reduced by turning them off and
placing them away from you while listening to a presentation or trying to write a letter
as you could make mistakes.

Cultural differences
Cultural differences can also be reduced by simply respecting other people’s beliefs
and not assuming they follow the same principles as you do. By not making fun of
others accents and the way they behave communication will be able to stay
effective.

Bored Audience
A bored audience can be a barrier to communication as if no one is listening to an
important presentation they may not know the seriousness of the situation. This can
be resolved by keeping presentations short and snappy, whilst also being clear
informative and possibly contain some humour.

Negative body language
Poor body language can be a communication barrier as it can show your lack of
interest in a subject putting people down from talking or presenting. This can be
resolved by keeping positive body language and when presenting not facing the
audience is seen as poor body language.

Inappropriate language
The use of inappropriate and negative language can be a communication barrier as
it can lead to misunderstandings and make others have a bad impression of you.
This can be resolved by abstaining from using slang and swear words frequently and
this will make communication much more effective and easier to understand for both
you and the other party.

Lack of concentration and interest
A lack of concentration and interest can be a communication barrier as if you are not
interested in a subject or not listening you will only give poor lazy answers such as
“yes” repeatedly and may miss out on important details and instructions. This can be
