More money to be made from US films in Canadian theatres cuz can be purchased fraction of
production cost – Canadians know more bout foreign societies & cultures than their own

Industrial life made family live closer to each other or in one home/shifted temporal dimensions
of social life where work and daily life must adjust to daily and seasonal cycles(maintaining
family and working separately, leisure and work)

Telephone enhanced economic relations created by telegraph

Motion picture – product of economies of scale, showing to many audiences hence spreading
cost of production among many audiences

Newspapers counted on financial support from government or direct party subsidies – special
pleading for politicians who support newspaper, attacks on political foes – newspapers just like
motion picture, telegraph, telephone took form and function in the emerging industrial society

Objectivity replaced partisan reporting as news increased in circulation among people and
profits

Fake news – describe particular news that are fabricated to undermine a political foe or
delegitimate an idea/describe news outlets that a politician sees as undermining general image
they wanna portray

Libertarian theorists see media as extension of one’s right to freedom/independent voices to
make gov responsible to people

Advertising encourage people to purchase goods/services and to support capitalist system –
media promote consumer lifestyle – info and entertainment assume existing economic system
and social relations are the best way of doing things

US media favour distributing homemade products over imports for economic reasons – US has
less tolerance for products not recognizably American

Canadian population lesser than US, selling US books/films more profitable because cost is
lower

Broadcasting and telecommunications act gave voice to public interest

Cultural industries – provide info base around communities and other social groups

Forth estate – news – idea of journalism is forth estate – news, press, journalists

Society – body of institutions & relationships within relatively large group of people –
relationships are formed

Culture – tending of something, crops or animals – culture, though of as developing one’s mind
– works and practices focusing on process of developing artistic works – knowledge, belief,
art,morals, capabilities and habits acquired by man as member of society.
