• Types of Depressive Disorders o Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) ▪ Characterized by persistent depresses episode lasting a minimum of 2 weeks to 5-6 months. ▪ Many people with MDD have a reoccurrence within the first year (50%), and most within a lifetime (85%). ▪ Feelings – sad, empty, hopeless ▪ Anhedonia – diminished interest or pleasure ▪ Insomnia or hypersomnia ▪ Psychomotor agitation or retardation ▪ Fatigue or loss of energy ▪ Diminished ability to think or concentrate ▪ Indecisive ▪ Recurrent thoughts of death ▪ Distress or impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning ▪ Possibly suicidal ▪ MDD can also be further diagnosed with psychotic features or with postpartum onset. o Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) ▪ A form of depression that occurs seasonally (usually winter) ▪ This type of depression is the result of less sunlight, thus light therapy is first-line treatment. o Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) ▪ Major feature is a chronically depressed mood for most of the days, and more days than not (for at least 2 years) ▪ This may be a diagnosis made in children and adolescents early onset –before age 21 late onset - 21 or older o Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder ▪ Includes a cluster of symptoms that occur in women the week prior to menses. These symptoms include mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and difficulty concentrating. .........................CO NTINUED......................
