Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann wurde am 15-ten November 1862 geboren in
Obersalzbrunn (Neder-Schlesien). Er schrieb Theaterstücke. Am Anfang waren das
realistische Stücke die Aufmerksamkeit schenkten an soziale Themen wie die
schlechte Umstände der Armen und andere Soziale Ungleichheiten. Später schrieb
er auch symbolische Werke die sich basierten auf die Griechische Mythologie.
Gerhart studierte zuerst Landwirtschaft, ging nach Abschluss danach weiter auf der
Kunstakademie wo er Skulptur lernte.
Im Jahr 1887 schrieb er die Novelle „Bahnwärter Thiel“ über ein Unglück auf eine
Bahnstecke. Die Geschichte beschreibt der Einfluss von Industrialisierung und
soziale Ständegesellschaft.
Theaterwissenschaftler sehen Gerhart Hauptmann als Mitbegründer von dem
Deutsche Naturalismus weil er tägliche Situationen realistisch beschreibt ohne sie zu
idealisieren.
In 1912 bekam Gerhart Hauptmann den Nobelpreis der Literatur und er gehörte zum
Friedrichshagener Kreis, eine Kreis von Intellektuelle in Berlin.
In die dreissiger Jahre ziehte er sich zurück aus dem öffentlichen Leben und gab
keine Meinung über dar Nationalsozialismus. Er starb in 1946 in seine Heimatregion
Schlesien, durfte da nicht begraben werden und wurde deshalb beigesetzt in einem
Kloster in Hiddensee.
In mehrere seine Hauser sind jetzt Museen über ihn errichtet.
