,QUESTION 1: POEM/SONG
TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Grade 9
Topic Clinical depression malady
Introduction
The poem is about clinical depression which according to the English oxford dictionary is defined
as “A mental disorder characterised by persistently depressed mood swings or loss of interest in
activities, causing significant impairment in daily life”. The poem focus on awareness,
discrimination, social stigma, misinformation and how those diagnosed should protect
themselves.
The poem has 5 stanzas with each focusing on the different aspects mentioned above, It has quite
an adequate amount of emotion and feelings expressed as well as focusing on the day to day
challenges that people face because of depression, this poem is very close to my heart as I have
lived with a sibling that had depression and have seen the effect I had on their life.
Stanza one basically focuses on awareness, it talks about the common symptoms that occur in
people with depression, it talks about how we should never misinterpret any symptoms we see in
them as sulking or attention seeking , it educates society on what depression is and how it comes
about. Stanza two talks about discrimination and how society Is so fast to judge because of the
misconceptions shared around, it talks of the effects and damage that society has on people with
depression but also it highlights how people with depression what to be treated and how pity
1.1.
does not help them but instead tear them down.
Stanza 3 talk about social stigma and how the media magnifies the disorder to make it look
contagious and how we indirectly isolate them, so it informs society that the illness is not
infectious , it shows how they don’t necessarily want be accepted because society is struggling
with that but all they are asking for is respect. Stanza 4 focuses on how people are misinformed
and it creates clarity on the fact that sometimes people associate every other symptom with
depression, the last stanza talks about how they protect themselves and what they also do to
ensure that they manage the disorder.
Poem/Song (Write THREE paragraphs only)
When you see me without a mere smile on my face or without interest in the things that used to
pleasure me
Do not judge nor isolate me
When you see me thinking about taking my own life or having difficulty thinking or concentrating
Do not think I’m sulking
When you see me fatigued or feeling unworthy
Do not think I’m seeking attention
Just know that I’m 1 in 15 adults that were colonized by a disorder that demands to be feed
Its name is “Clinical depression”
Oh and remember I did not choose to be like this but due to chemical imbalance, genetics and
trauma, this disorder navigated itself to me until it found me
, Why should I feel ashamed? I’ve got nothing to hide
Why should I wail? It is not my fault
Why I’m I hiding? It is not a secret
Well maybe it’s the social analysis
Well maybe it’s the misconception
Well maybe it’s the words that cut through me like a knife
The words that frustrate me and cause tears that do not cease
But if you stopped and took a closer look
You will see that I’m still the same person
Do not pity me
Do not treat me any different
Do not think of me as crazy
Yes, I admit I’ve got depression
Talk to me, give me a smile and be kind to me
It’s saddening that the media is so insensitive
The way they are so quick to print salacious
Circulation grabbing stories
Oh dear society, oh how you treat us like violent criminals
Oh how you care little and so quick to say how dangerous we are
I often forget to be kind to myself because of your voices
Yes, I have an illness
But I’m not contagious nor infectious
I do not say accept me but at least respect me
I hear they say we are always sad but no we have our happy days
I hear they say we are dependent on antidepressants but there are other solutions too
I hear they say we pass out a lot but that’s epilepsy
Above all I have learned to protect me
This is me and I cannot change me
How do you maintain they say?
I protect my atmosphere and pull away from bad energies
I walk down the street to catch a breath of fresh air
To clear my mind, to reduce stress
So the next time you want to be negative
Remember my tears
Remember my pain
Remember me
