Mysticism
-A way to feel the religion
-Feel the presence of God
-Example: buddhist being enlightened
There are specific things that you do in order to have a mystical experience. In some
religions, the person connects movement with breathing.

Before the arrival of Christians
-Common worldview
-World is seen as a tree
-Shared deities
-Many different religious traditions
-Pyramids built in the same way
And then the Christians come
-Some of the Christians want to save the soul of the people
-Others want the resources of the place
-Tonantzin is an aztec mother goddess
-Spanish destroy her temple
-Juan is a native person who converted to Christianity
-He has a vision one day
● Virgin of Guadaloupe
● Looks mexican
● Speaks the native language of the Mexicans
-Bishop says he needs proof
-Virgin of Guadaloupe becomes symbol of Catholic Mexicans
● Mixed heritage
● Inspires hope since shows that the Catholic Mexicans will survive with new system
● Incorporation of old deities
In Canada
After arrival of Europeans, Indigenous people pushed to the reserves

-Limits hunting, fishing (primary sources of food for Indigenous people)
-Outlaws religious rituals (pow wows, sundance)
-Canadian government considers potlatch dangerous
-Pow wow aim: talk about the relationships with different nations and politics
