,Introduction
The following presentation will be
an overview of the various
surveying equipment and
instruments used in the
construction and the built
environment sector. The
presentation will provide an
overview of linear surveying,
levelled surveying and angular
surveying and the equipment
used to complete these tasks.

, Linear Survey
Linear surveying is the accurate measurement of a distance between two
points. It traditionally involves the stretching of tapes, chains or strings to
measure distance. There are two main types of linear survey and below is a
brief overview of them.
1. Traverse surveys are the measuring of distance along a diagonal line called
the traverse. The perpendicular lines at right angles along the traverse are
called offsets. The triangles are used to calculate linear measurements.
2. Trilateration surveys measures the three sides of a triangle. This method is
unlike triangulation as no angles are measured usually because obtaining
them would be too difficult. This method is used when offsets would be too
long (over 10m).
