You are part of a police community education group. You have been tasked with
presenting information on the levels of the UK government to police community

support officers as part of their ongoing training. You must also inform them about
local elections to demonstrate your knowledge.

Produce an A4 booklet that outlines the responsibilities of different levels of
Government in the UK (P1). You need to include:

 European Parliament
 Central government
 Devolved parliaments
 Regional governments
 Local authorities
 Other institutions in the government process
 Branches of government (executive, legislative, judicial)

For P2 you need to describe the role of government departments in relation to
the public services, talk about the government departments’ responsible for
the public services that we have discussed in class and who they are
accountable for.

Finally you need to write about the UK electoral processes explaining
the following points:

 Candidate selection processes
 The influence of the party system on elections
 Representatives
 Period of election
 Publicity and electioneering activities undertaken
 The voting processes

To enable your officers to get more information you will compare in detail the
different electoral processes used at different levels of government within the
UK including the voting systems used. You must include a comparison of the
election process for the elected representatives for at least two levels of
government.
