Unit 8 Assignment B: The impact of Hodgkin lymphoma on the lymphatic
System
Anatomy and functions of the Lymphatic System

Tonsils

Thymus

Axillary nodes
Spleen

Abdominal nodes Supratrochlear nodes

Lacteals (in the small intestine)

Inguinal nodes

Bone Marrow

Popliteal Nodes

 Axillary Nodes: The Axillary nodes are located in the tissues in and around the
armpits. The role of the Axillary nodes is to filter and conduct lymph from the upper
limbs and back and the pectoral region.
 Supratrochlear Nodes: Supratrochlear nodes are located 1-2cm above the elbow
joint. Their job is to drain the forearm and send efferent signals to the deep
lymphatic channels of the arm.

,  Inguinal Nodes: Inguinal Nodes are located along the pubic bone. The role of the
Inguinal Nodes is to drain drain first to the body's external iliac lymph nodes, then to
the pelvic lymph nodes, and lastly to the paraaortic lymph nodes.
 Popliteal Nodes: The popliteal lymph nodes are located in the leg near the knees.
The role of the popliteal node is to filter and balance the blood supply to the lower
extremities.
 Abdominal Nodes: The abdominal nodes are located in the abdomen near the
intestines. The abdominal lymphatic nodes are arranged into the superficial and
deep groups. The superficial group drains the abdominal wall. The deep group of the
abdominal nodes returns lymph from the abdominal viscera
 Tonsils: The Palatine Tonsils are located at the opening on either side of the throat.
The role of the palatine tonsils is to filter bacteria and viruses, and also produce
white blood cells and antibodies.
 Thymus: The thymus is located behind the sternum and between the lungs. The job
of the thymus is to develop T-lymphocytes (T-cells) which are an important type of
white blood cells.
 Spleen: The spleen is located is the upper left part of the abdomen underneath the
ribcage. The purpose of the spleen is to clear out worn-out red blood cells and other
foreign bodies from the bloodstream in order to fight off infections.
 Lacteals: Lacteals are located in villi in the small intestine. The function of lacteal is to
absorb dietary fats from the villi.
 Bone Marrow: bone marrow is located in the cavity of long bones. The main function
of bone marrow is to produce red blood cells and lymphocytes.
Lymphatic Valves
Lymph valves are found in the larger lymph vessels. They are used to prevent the backflow
of lymph so that it only flows forwards
Formation of Lymph and its roles in the fighting of disease
Lymph is formed when the interstitial fluid is collected through tiny lymph capillaries, which
are found all over the body. The functions of lymph are to capture the bacteria and bring it
to lymph nodes, where they are destroyed, and It to help in the absorption of fatty acids and
transport of fat and chyle to the circulatory system.
Hodgkin Lymphoma
Hodgkin lymphoma is a sort of cancer of the lymphatic system which occurs when B-
lymphocytes reproduce abnormally and gather in certain parts of the lymphatic system such
as the lymph nodes. The affected lymphocytes lose the ability to fight infections leaving the
affected person open to infections and disease.
