1.1 Explain the term “Millennial Generation” in your own words.
The term “Millennial Generation” refer s to the people born in between 1982 and
2003 (Mokoena 2016) and how they are raised with the technology of today. They
are always up to date with all of the latest news and technology and have access
to the internet. For example when my parents needed to do research for school
they went to the library. In my generation (Millennial Generation) we have access
to the internet which takes little effort.
1.2 Describe the core traits that are connected to the Millennial
Generation.
1. Special: They have been made to feel they are special.
o They have always been treated as special and important. This generation of
children has been the most wanted. Every milestone in their lives has been
marked with celebrations and praise. They may carry a sense of entitlement of
themselves. They may claim they want privacy but they crave attention.
2. Sheltered :They have been sheltered by their parents and society
o Highly protected as children. They grew up in a time of increasing safety
measures like car seats, baby on board signs, school lockdowns. They were
rarely left unsupervised. Their conflict is usually taken care of by their parents.
3. Confident :They are confident, with high levels of trust and optimism:
o They are motivated, goal-oriented and confident in themselves and the future.
They expected the school to help them in their greatness. They may brag about
their generation’s power and potential. They are assertive and believe they are
“right”.
4. Team-oriented :They are team-oriented group rather than individualists
o They may sacrifice their own identity to be part of a team. They form a tight-knit
generation. They do not want to stand out among their peers; they want to be
seen as part of the group.
5. Conventional : The are conventional, following rules and standards:
o Respectful to the point of not questioning authority. They fear being considered
non-conformist. Their clothes, music and cultural markings will be very
mainstream. They are civic-minded and believe the government knows what is
best and will take care of them. They value their parents’ opinions very highly.
6. Pressured : They have been pressured to study hard and excel
o Tightly scheduled as children and used to having every hour of their day filled
with structured activity. They feel pressured to succeed. In elementary, middle
and high school they have had more hours homework and less free time than
any off the previous generations.
