HUMN 303N WEEK 3 DISCUSSION QUESTION HUMN303N-10236 Week 3 Discussion: Influences of Ancient Architecture Discussion Week 3 Humanities Hello Doc and Class, This week the two architectural works I chose from Greco-Roman architecture are The Parthenon from the Renaissance and the Santa Susanna from the Baroque period. "Before the invasion of Greece, the Roman style of architecture was more plain, and the emphasis was more on functionality” (Chamberlain University College of Nursing, 2020). The function of the Parthenon was to shelter the monumental statue of Athena. Marble was utilized for the first time, making the columns, and the foundation was made of limestone. The structure was built with large columns to give its proportions precisions; however, the columns also had imperfections to allow people to look into the building at all different angles. The building's symmetry is in line and gives well balance when looking into the building. (Cartwright, 2020). The Santa Susanna church was the first architecture known to cross over from the renaissance period to the baroque period. "Baroque architecture was used to signify the wealth and power of the Catholic Church”(Kimutai, 2019). The function of the Santa Suzanna is to represent the Catholic church; however, with the Baroque period's style, there was more focus on design versus the structure modernization. The Santa Susanna also had columns and pillars in the architecture but were smoothly sculpted differently than during the renaissance period architecture. The Greek artistic style influenced the Parthenon work. The Parthenon represents Greek thought principles during the highest point of the classical era through the creative means it still has influences of the roman architecture (Chamberlain University College of Nursing, 2020). These standards show the proportions of the building in its underlying architecture components. The Roman period's appearance influences the Santa Suzanna greatly influenced by the elegance and beauty of design with vivid details. During the Baroque time, it was a time for change where architecture was changing into more richly sculpted surfaces focusing on more design than structure. To look at The Parthenon as an evaluative critic, I see the subject matter in this architecture. It can be seen through the symmetry that pillars and columns are displayed in the structure. This structure was damaged later in time from an explosion. However, the insight and thought behind what it was used for as a temple to protect and shelter goddess Athena has great meaning. This architecture piece is from the classical Greek architecture style and therefore has great importance and is still being looked at today. I would say this has a great history and meaning and high quality of work. To look at Santa Suzanna as an evaluative critic, I see subject matter in the architecture now because I have researched the church's history. Knowing the movement from the renaissance period to the baroque period, I can see the similarities that the Greco- Roman period had with architecture but how they moved into more of the beauty of the design piece than just a structure. With this being said the architecture from an evaluative critic wanted to display more attraction to the human eye. I believe the work was greatly detailed. Looking at both images, you can see the symmetry between the two; however, there are clear differences in the detail of the architecture of each of the buildings. Being able to research and look at both architectural structures really gave me an insight into the beauty of the influences of ancient architecture. References Cartwright, M. (2020).
