My expectations and first reaction
Before I started reading this book, my expectations were very high. That’s because ‘the Great Gatsby’
is a real classic and I had read many positive reviews. My first reaction of the book was not very
positive, because I found it difficult to get into the story. I did not understand what was being written
about, because I had to get used to the language.
Summary
Nick Carraway moves to New York in 1922. He rents a house near his niece Daisy and her husband
Tim Buchanans in an upscale neighbourhood on Long Island. Nick meets golf star Jordan Baker, witch
whom he gets into a relationship, and Tom’s mistress, before being invited to a party by his wealthy
neighbour Jay Gatsby. At the party he meets Gatsby himself. Nick and Gatsby meet regularly after the
party, allowing Nick to learn more about Gatsby’s past.
Jordan Baker tells Nick that his niece had a relationship a relationship with Gatsby in the past, but her
parents forced her to break up with him and marry Tom, because he had a lot more money. Gatsby
has moved to Daisy’s neighbourhood to be close to her, without Daisy having any idea. Gatsby asks
Nick if he can arrange a meeting so they can finally see each other again. Nick arranges it, and the
two slowly fall in love again.
Later, Nick learns more about Jay Gatsby’s past, who turns out to be actually called James Gatz.
James grew up in the countryside, but he ran away from home when he was seventeen years old and
he changed his name.
On Nick’s birthday, he goes to New York with Daisy, Tom, Jordan and Gatsby. There, the group
discovers a number of things: Tom’s mistress goes abroad with her husband and Daisy and Gatsby
love each other again. At the end of the day, Daisy drives into Tom’s mistress, Myrtle, who dies
immediately. Gatsby is in her car and keeps it a secret from everyone. However, Mr. Wilson, Myrtles
husband, discovers which car killed his wife and kills Gatsby, because he thinks Gatsby was the driver
of the car. Wilson commits suicide after his murder. Jordan breaks up with Nick and leaves New York
with Tom and Daisy. Nick returns home to start a new life.
