ASSIGNMENT 01

UNIQUE NO.: 731786

TMN3705
TEACHING NATURAL SCIENCE

DUE DATE: 29 JUNE 2020

, ACTIVITY 1.1:
1.) A Learner’s experience in the following classes:
A lot of what a learner experiences in a classroom is dependent on the teacher.

If the teacher doesn’t show any passion or excitement towards the subject, the learner will
experience it as a dreary, dull subject. The vice versa applies when a teacher is passionate and
excited about a subject.

SCIENCE CLASS:
When a learner thinks of science class, they must see it as a discovery process. If a science course is
done correctly, students can experience an abundance of fascinating things.

To me, personally, science class was where I could de-filter my insatiable curiosity about how things
are connected, how they interact with one another and how they’re constructed. You ask questions
in order to try and solve problems and thereafter form an understanding around the problem or
situation.

The science class is also a great opportunity to teach a student self-learning. It teaches you to ask
questions, solve the problem to the question and through this process, learn.

TECHNOLOGY CLASS:
Technology as a subject can be a saving grace for the learners who struggle with the theoretical side
of school assignments and theoretical learning.

Technology compensates by presenting something that you can use your other senses to learn from.
Activities can most often be represented by something that you can see, touch or interact with.

Technology as a subject delivers a different type of engagement with the learners than most other
subjects. They have the opportunity to actively interact and engage with in order to form a new and
better perspective around the subject.

Technology is a subject that’s ever-changing, so it engages with the students by communicating
knowledge and ideas in new and exciting ways.

2.) Herewith follows one GOOD experience and one BAD experience:
GOOD:
From personal experience, the Science and Technology classes were the place where I was able to
experience the subjects on an interactive level. This increased my willingness and my eagerness to
work and participate in the work and assignments.

I was able to live out my curiosity and not be dependent on others for the answers, because most of
the assignments were of such variety that you could ascertain solutions to the problems on your
own.

BAD:
From personal experience, the teachers responsible for the Science and Technology were visibly not
as enthusiastic about their subject as would be expected.

, They showed a lack of interest and sometimes even a lack of preparation towards the work, which
could have quelled my thirst for knowledge and my excitement around my curiosity in the subject.

Luckily my personality saved me from being deterred, but I realize that many other people wouldn’t
have persisted with their own excitement around the subject in a similar situation.

Do you think this has changed since you studied Science and Technology at
school? Explain.
Science and Technology in and of itself won’t change, but merely adapt to the times. It will always be
subjects that ignite the spark of curiosity in learners and encourage them to ask more questions and
calculate and draw up their own conclusions surrounding problems presented to them.

The content of a subject can change, but as long as it’s labelled as Science / Technology, it will
always consist of a question-inquiry-conclusion-based setup.

A variable will always be the teacher and the teacher’s approach to the subject. Different teachers
approach a subject in different ways. Their approach and their energy towards the subject will also
vary.

Something that will be a changing variable in terms of content is when new inventions and new
discoveries are made in the science and technological world.
Science and Technology are subjects which can be utilized to show how life on Earth is ever-changing
and developing into something bigger and better.

Schools can develop different programmes and centres (depending on the school and the funds they
have to their expense) in order to help improve on the quality of the subjects. I.e. in the instance of
laboratories, better equipment can be acquired or computerization of assignments can be used. In
terms of computerization – virtual models can be used instead of physical models, in order to save
money as well as space and resources.

What does this suggest about you as a Natural Science and Technology
teacher?
A Science and Technology teacher must be flexible and innovative.

In order to make the subject as optimally interesting and engaging as possible, the teacher would
have to come up with methods and ideas in order to keep the learners captivated in the subject and
to encourage them to participate in the activities and assignments.

Thinking outside the box and creating representatives of an assignment using every-day-life
scenarios is always something that brings the lesson into a perspective which most everyone can
relate to and form an understanding around.

The teacher is also more responsible for the learners’ engagement in the subject than one would
suspect. If a teacher shows passion and energy towards the subject, the learners are more likely to
be influenced to also feel some excitement towards it.

A Science and Technology teacher must be able to go beyond the bounds of the school system and
think of creative ways to make the subject engaging and interesting to the learners.
