BPT1501: ASSIGNMENT 4: CASE STUDY SEMESTER 1
UNIQUE NO. : 807400 STUDENT NO. : 62191411

DIVERSITY IN THE CLASSROOM:

Because of the fact that we, in South Africa, celebrate our diversity due to the wide variety of
cultures, languages, etc. we often find ourselves in the situation where messages are
incorrectly conveyed or received due to this problem in communication, because teaching a
child with minimum English proficiency can be challenging.

In our education today this plays a great role in teaching of students. As much as we would
want to communicate with each learner in their own language in order for them to fully
comprehend the message we’re trying to deliver, it is impossible for one teacher to achieve
such a feat.

We have concluded to teach in universal languages (such as Afrikaans and English) to ensure
the maximum comprehension possible. Although we teach in universal languages, we still
have to teach learners about the other languages to ensure that they can go into the world
and have the basic communication skills in order to convey messages to other people who
might not understand their home language. Therefore it is important for learners to partake
in discussions, reading and listening activities in said languages.

It is our job, as teachers, to achieve the feat to get learners to fully participate in above
mentioned activities – even in the event where the learners do not understand, and cannot
speak or read the language.

Teaching Strategies regarding diverse classroom:

As a teacher in an incredibly diverse country, such as South Africa, where there are learners
from multiple cultural backgrounds, languages, ethnic backgrounds, religions, economic
statuses, etc. you have to keep in mind that in order to reach every child in your classroom
regarding your lesson activity and subject, you have to have a full-proof teaching strategy in
order to convey the message properly to each learner.

Every learner in the classroom is different from the other, and has their own personal
learning methods that best suit their needs. This, as well the diversity in the classroom, can
be quite challenging for a teacher, but with the right mind set and teaching technique, it can
be overcome with a lot of love, and a lot of patience.
