ETHL102L: Semester 02
Assignment 02: 676028

1. TALENT VS INTELLIGENCE
Talent is not the same as intelligence: Talent starts with each person’s genetic inheritance.
You are born with a set of talents, that can be developed, but not gained, it’s a special ability
that you’ve been given which can be developed only once it has been identified.
Intelligence is the gaining of knowledge and skills which can be applied to the subject at
hand.
Intelligence comes in many different forms, which means that there is no such thing as an
overall intelligence and it is not fixed at birth – skills (intelligence) can be taught, talents
cannot.
Intelligence VS Talent can be seen in the same sense as we perceive Nature VS Nurture. It’s
what you learn and gain knowledge on versus the development of what you were born with.
The brain is elastic – meaning that it possesses the ability to physically rewire itself to
become smarter – therefore knowledge can continuously be gained and intelligence can be
developed throughout a person’s lifespan – where a talent is genetically transmitted to
someone else through birth and must be developed from there.

2. “… school is the best place to learn.” It’s implied that school and the school environment is
the optimal place to gain knowledge and gain new attributes to your intellect, yet it is only a
myth. When operating in a classroom environment, you study from a theoretical aspect. Yet
it is proven that the human mind is better equipped to actively operating with something
that leads to the gain of practical knowledge about the specific subject of learning, which is
more effective than learning from a book or lecture. Knowledge can be gained through
various reasons and methods. Actively operating with something and seeing the
mechanisms of it and how it works, gives a new aspect to the knowledge gained, other than
when you only take in the theoretical aspect of the subject of learning.

3. The brain receives information through all of our senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell,
as well as by what we imagine, think, feel and our sense of intuition.

Your brain stores information by patterns and associations. Certain actions cause certain
reactions, and that’s how your brain relays information back to you. If you had an
unpleasant experience because of a specific action, your brain will warn you against the
thought of reliving it again – your primal instinct is to protect yourself, so your brain will
associate that specific action with the unpleasant experience, in order to spare you from
doing it again.

Learning whilst using more than just one or two senses, enhances the capacity of the
knowledge gained by the experience. That’s why practically working with something has a
longer lasting effect of knowledge gained than when learning something theoretically
through means of books, or lectures from teachers.

, 4. 10 Steps to Success:
1. Set a specific goal – and set deadlines.
Before you start learning something new and trying to achieve something, you must first
know what it is that you’re trying to achieve. You have to set up your main goal – what you
want to have achieved at the end of your process. In order to reach your final goal, you have
to break it up in smaller goals, in order to reach the big one in the end. By breaking it up, you
give yourself space for improvement and you set it at your own pace which you know you
will be able to accomplish. After every small feat that you have accomplished towards your
main goal, reward yourself as a sense of encouragement to continue pushing for the big
thing.

2. Ask!
Asking questions is probably one of the most sufficient ways in gaining knowledge. Never be
afraid to ask for something. By asking someone for their help, it means that you’re getting
advice or a piece of knowledge from someone who is more experienced in the field, and
who has probably already accomplished their goal in the same field as you have set yours.
You are met with examples of errors you might find through the relay of their experience,
which can also give you a sense of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to achieving your goal.
Asking doesn’t necessarily mean asking someone in a verbal sense, it can also mean
confronting books or blogs or statements of all sorts about the subject.

3. Learn by doing.
In education, practice is more efficient than theory. So, by using as many senses as you can
during your learning process, you enhance the level in which you receive the knowledge
needed, which will make it easier for you to achieve your goal in the end. Interacting with
what you’re learning will speed up the learning process, as well as give you a better
understanding of what you’re learning.

4. Draw Mind Maps instead of linear notes.
Information is stored in the brain through means of patterns and association. By using mind
maps, instead of neatly written linear lines, you work with big patterns, bright colours,
symbols, etc. which affects the memory-method of the brain, which makes it easier to
remember and at the same time, easier to learn.

5. Learn the art of relaxed awareness.
Your state of mind when your start your learning experience is one of the most important
key factors to efficient studying. If your brain is busy with a lot of thoughts all at one time, it
won’t be able to focus on what’s important. Being relaxed enhances your ability to
concentrate and focus on the task at hand. You will also have a heightened memory that
adds to your learning experience. There are many ways to achieve this relaxed state of mind
– for example exercise, meditation, deep breathing, listening to calming music, etc. To each
person their own.

6. Practise, practice, practice.
“Practice makes perfect.” When learning something new, put it to use as much as possible.
When you interact with it, you learn it on a new level, and you learn to use it in everyday
life. The more you use it, the more you repeat it, the more you’re interacting with it, the
easier it is to remember.
