Chapter one
Coconut Cove, Florida: Roy Eberhardt (from Montana) sees a strange boy running without a
backpack or shoes. Meanwhile, Officer Delinko meets Curly (Leroy Branitt), he’s bald and is
supervising engineer at the construction site, at Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House, that is
being built on top of the burrowing owls nests. He says that his property has been vandalized. ‘Kids’
pulled survey stakes out of the ground and filled the holes. Delinko trips over an burrowing owl hole.

Chapter two
Roy sees the strange boy running again. He tries to get out of the bus but Dana stops him. Roy
punches Dana in the face and chases the strange boy, who’s very fast.
Roy has a conversation with Viola Hennepin, vice principal of Trace Middle School.
Roy gets a two-week suspension from the bus. The blonde girl that Roy ran into while he got out of
the bus talks to Roy and tells him to mind his own business.

Chapter three
Delinko gets called by Leroy again and now, the air has been let out of the tires of the truck, in
addition to the stakes being pulled out. Two alligators are inside the porta-potties. Roy tells his parents
about punching Dana. Delinko goes over the incident with his sergeant and the police captain, who
think it was done by kids but Delinko thinks someone is out to get Mother Paula.

Chapter four
Beatrice Leep, the blonde girl seems bold. Delinko has his first morning at the construction site. While
checking out the property, he stumbles upon some of the burrowing owls. He falls asleep in his patrol
car but when he wakes up, the windows are covered in black spray paint. Roy decides to confront
Beatrice at lunchtime and tells her he wants to handle things normally. Roy goes to Dana’s house to
deliver his letter, and meets Dana’s mom. The bruises are way worse than Roy had thought.

Chapter five
Roy sneaks out of the house, stumbling down a slope, he finds remains of a campfire surrounded with
footprints and three mysterious garbage bags, filled with clothes and snakes. Roy gets a hood over
his head and ties around his wrists. A mysterious boy takes him back to the golf course. He’s
apparently called Mullet Fingers.

Chapter six
Officer Delinko’s ‘accident’ has been published and Roy recognizes the East Oriole street name.
Beatrice Leep’s bus stop is on West Oriole. Delinko has desk duty for a month as his punishment.
Roy goes to the golf course again, he stops at East Oriole and Woodbury (the Mother Paula's
construction site) where Curly shouts at him to get off the site. When he gets there, all of Mullet
Fingers’ traces are gone and someone stole his bike. He has to walk home in the rain when he meets
Beatrice riding his bike. She asks why Roy is carrying a shoebox.

Chapter seven
Roy goes to a junkyard with Beatrice, she asks what's in Roy's shoebox. Roy had planned on giving
the shoeless kid some shoes. Beatrice will give the shoes to the barefoot kid if Roy stops lurking
around. The boy turns out to be her stepbrother. She nicknamed him Mullet Fingers since he could
catch a mullet using his hands. He recently ran away from school and Beatrice is the only person who
knows he's back. Delinko hears information about a missing local boy named Roy. He finds Roy
walking outside and gives him a ride. Delinko asks Roy if he could get his father to write a short letter
to the department that makes Delinko look good. When Roy’s parents talk about the article, Delinko
gets away really fast.
