Assignment 9: My Learning Curve

My experience with the Module was overly positive and a bit of a wake-up call!

Regarding the Microsoft Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint exercises was more of a refresher as I was
adept in most of all the exercises. My favourite of these being the PowerPoint assignment.

At the beginning, I found a bit of difficulty in navigating through all the online work spaces,
MyLabsPlus and MyUnisa. But eventually after spending enough time and developing habits and
mapping the flow, I then found it easier to find my way around and understand where everything
was, as if it were my own study with a book shelf, sorting all by books in alphabetical order.

When starting with the Microsoft exercises, the first being the MS word, photography ad
assignment. However, I did take this a little too casually. I did not take the time to fully comprehend
the precise requirements, as when working through the assignment, I had already made
assumptions of how the formatting of the document was to be done by making a visual comparison
and through my own past experiences using MS Word. I eventually found the correct way of doing
each task of each assignment. I decided to take the time to go through each video tutorial and
practise exercise with the MS Excel and MS PowerPoint assignments.

Being out of school for over a decade and this being my first attempt at a degree is both challenging
and exciting. A definite change in attitude and prioritization and planning was required. These skills
came in handy as I have vast experience in day to day activities at work.

Regarding the forum assignments, reading through Assignment 1, the digital divide , I learnt the
most.

Assignment 3, you can say that I chose the road less travelled, by undertaking the NGO option as I
felt it to be most interesting, but not the easiest option. It was good to feel challenged and having to
do a bit more research was pleasing. In retrospect, I always think how great and convenient it was to
have access to the internet to run any search was amazing. Having left school in the early 2000s,
when dial-up modems were used to connect to the internet – and how slow the researching was
compared to these days, where webpages load seamlessly. I started to feel really privileged and
realised how technology helps us in making our lives so much easier than in the past. This recognised
how my generation was the first be exposed in gaining access to the vast resource of knowledge in
using the internet. Also, to think that the older generation of students would have to make a real
effort in going to a library and sifting through several books to eventually find a valid source to
reference.

Referencing material from other sources and expanding on others’ ideas and coming up with my
own point of view of the subject matter was very thought-provoking.

Learning to effectively quote, reference and not plagiarise was a big learning curve for me, as I had
never been exposed these methods before.

Learning to think differently by freeing my mind, to question the standard was stimulating. Not to
take things at face-value, learning the art of Reflection, I to agree being the most important skill I
have learnt so far.
