Different factors influencing my adoption of mobile telephone for academic and social
activities/endeavours.



1. Time and effort

Saving time in this busy age is probably my most important factor. If I can buy or use something
which can save my time I have available. Then definitely would be a major influencer. Using mobile
phones makes it easy to save on time, as the device is portable and can be kept on your person at all
times making it also convenient saving on expending energy and effort. No more searching for public
phones or having to buy phone cards etc.



2. Affordability

The mobile phone is no longer a commodity. Almost everyone has a mobile device since the
affordability is no longer a concern. It not only allows middle and high-income groups to own, lower
income-groups are able to afford to purchase the mobile phone. Every day, you will see someone
you perhaps least expect to be walking around with a mobile phone.

Affordability is therefore, no longer a limiting factor in owning a mobile phone, however, only the
level of technology, in terms of the phones feature set. i.e. Smart phones are the new mobile phone
technology with windows operating systems with high-speed internet available. In its most basic
affordable use, all you need is voice or SMS services when using your mobile phone.



3. Availability

Mobile phone services have been made available to the general public in South Africa due to the
strength of South Africa’s mobile infrastructure. Coverage to isolated areas has made sure that equal
opportunity to use the mobile phone services is available to all.



4. Necessity

Having a mobile device, is almost a necessity, for everyday use i.e. for banking, registering for all
types of services whether online or in office. Having a mobile device, is essential in gaining
employment, due to the convenience in being available to receive calls increases the amount of job
opportunities for call backs.



5. Fast and reliable

In the last 18 years The SMS servicing part of the mobile technology has been popular. As it is
convenient, fast and RELIABLE in terms of delivery of the message as South Africa’s mobile
infrastructure is well established.
