An NGO in a small district of a Southern African Mountain Kingdom is keen on exploring the use of
voice mail technologies to deliver messages on preventing pulmonary diseases caused by air
pollution to a large segment of the local population.
1. To Identify the different hardware requirements that will be needed by the producer of the
voice mail, the service provider and the beneficiary of the voice messages.
1.1. Producer:
Hardware requirements:
Laptop/PC with an operating system, RAM and sufficient Hard drive space for recordings
(pre-recorded audio files). The laptop would require a Microphone and recording software
to record and convert voice to an audio file format (essential)
Modem with High speed Internet connection (essential)
Multiple mobile phones, smartphones or tablets for support services to contact you on from
the voice messages being sent (add-on)
1.2. Service provider:
The service provider hosting the voice messaging services with require:
Multiple Primary Servers, with sufficient RAM and Hard drive space to house the voice
messaging platform or engine, a database managing of customer information and contacts,
reporting system, website (essential) and secondary servers for redundancy or fail-over of
services (add-on)
Primary Network switches, routers and cabling (essential), linking servers and secondary
switches and routers for redundancy (add-on)
A Primary Modem with a High-speed Internet connection (essential) and again secondary
modem for redundancy (addon) and if possible an two different Internet Service providers
(i.e. Telkom (essential ISP and Neotel (Neotel being an addon)
1.3.Beneficiary:
Hardware requirements:
Mobile phone (essential), Smart phone (essential), PC (addon), Laptop (addon)or Tablet
(addon) to receive and listen to voice messages (essential)
2. The physical constraints of the mobile technology:
Mobile network coverage, being able to cover the most common mobile network operators
such as Vodacom, Cell C, MTN and Telkom Mobile is critical
