The CAGE questionnaire only assesses for alcohol-related harm and alcohol dependence symptoms, and not alcohol consumption (Tan et al., 2018). The CAGE questionnaire can be self-administered or administered by a health care professional, and it is important to inform the patient that the questions should be answered as they relate to the patient’s entire life, not just the current conditions (Williams, 2014). CAGE questionnaire consists of four questions: 1. Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking? 2. Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? 3. Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking? 4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover (Eye-opener)? Prior to administering the CAGE questionnaire, asking questions related to how much or how frequently a patient consumes alcohol should be asked after the questionnaire has been completed. Each question is scored 1 for ‘yes’ and 0 for ‘no’. The higher the score the greater the indication of alcohol dependence; therefore, a total score of 2 or greater is considered clinically significant (Williams, 2014).
