M2 Analyse how the structures of two contrasting businesses allow each to achieve its
aims and objectives.
1. You must use P3 to complete M2.
2. For both businesses, you must explain fully the type of organisational structure they have. Try
to search for a governance framework. Consider the advantages of the organisational
structure. Now consider the aims and objectives of both businesses that you discussed in P3.
3. You must now discuss fully how the actual organisational structure allows each business to
achieve its objectives. Link the need for organisational structures:
All jobs that need doing are identified and allocated
Lines of communication are established
Levels of responsibility are identified and allocated
Levels of authority are attributed
4. You got to see the big picture. For example, how decisions made in Tesco HQ are disseminated
to the various branches, where staff carry out their respective roles that meet the aims and
objectives of the business.
D1 Evaluate the reasons for the success of two contrasting businesses, reflecting on
evidence gathered.
1. Remember that there are different reasons for success, depending on whether the
business is a profit or not for profit business and its aims and objectives.
2. Consider the following factors in your evaluation:
a) Mission statement, vision, values, SMART objectives and strategies to achieve aims
and objectives
b) Brand name, innovative products and services, campaign victories, successful
fundraising, government support, etc.
c) Engaging and communicating effectively with stakeholders to aid business success –
using effective methods, eg. social media to engage/communicate
d) Organisational structure – explain how the organisational structure allows the
business to operate effectively.
