Week 1
Scope of Practice:
Do:
● Adults 18+ under supervision of RN or Physician ● Administration solutions per a
PIV or CIV line:
○ 5% Dextrose and Water (D5W)
○ 5% Dextrose and Lactated Ringer's (D5/LR)
○ 5% Dextrose and Normal Saline (D5/NS)
○ Normal Saline (NS) (0.9%NaCl)
○ Lactated Ringer’s
○ 0.45% Sodium Chloride and water (0.45%NaCl) (½ NS)
○ 0.2% Sodium Chloride and water (0.2%NaCl) (¼ NS)
● Any previous solutions listed above that contains Vitamins and Electrolytes
AFTER
RN has initiated the first bag with the Vitamins and Electrolytes
● Initiate and Maintain IVPB containing antibiotic/Anti-Infective through Venous line
(PIV or CIV lines including PICCs)
● Prepare or reconstitute Antibiotic
● Inject Heparin or NS to Flush an IV
● Place an IV 3 inches or less into hand, forearm, or antecubital space (inner
elbow)
, ● Change tubing to a central if the solution or medication is one the LPN is
approved
● Change tubing to a central if the solution or medication is one the LPN is
approved to hang and maintain (antibiotics, antifungals, solution mixes)
● Stop blood or blood component infusion when/if a complication arises ● Stop a
PCA infusion pump when/if complications arises
DO NOT:
● Initiate or Maintain:
○ Blood or Blood Components
○ Solutions for TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition)
○ Cancer Chemotherapy or Antineoplastic Agents (Cancer-fighting drugs)
○ Investigational or experimental Medications
○ Intravenous Piggyback except an antibiotic*
● Initiate or discontinue any catheter longer than 3 inches
● Discontinue a central venous, aterial, or any other line that does not terminate in
a peripheral vein
● Program or set function of a PCA
● Mix, prepare or reconstitute any medication for IV therapy except for an antibiotic
additive
● Administer medications by direct IV route (Push) except to inject Heparin or
normal saline to flush an Intermittent infusion device or Heparin lock
● Change tubing on Arterial Line
● Change Intermittent infusion device on a central line (including PICCs),
therefore, not allowed to draw blood from central lines or PICCs
