Lesson Title: Exploring the Butterfly’s Lifecycle
Subject(s): Science, Reading, Writing
Grade/Level/Setting: 2nd grade, classroom
Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge: Students must have a basic understanding that living things grow
and change over time. Students must also be familiar with basic sentence structure and be able to read
at least at the 1st-grade level.
Standards and Objectives

SC.2.L.16.- “Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans
and butterflies.”
Learning Objective(s): Given visual prompts, students will write a four-sentenceparagraph describing the
four stages of a butterfly's life cycle using transition words (First, Next, Then, Last) with 100% accuracy.
Assessment
Summative: Students will be tasked with creating a butterfly life cycle diagram and writing a
four-sentence paragraph that describes what happens in each stage of the butterfly's life.
Formative: After reading the text Becoming a Butterfly by Grace Hansen to the students, the teacher will
engage students in a think-pair-share activity, asking questions such as “What is the difference between
a larva and a pupa?” Teachers will gauge students’ comprehension of the butterfly life cycle based on
the shared responses.
Materials
● Becoming a Butterfly by Grace Hansen
● Printed Butterfly Life Cycle Diagrams
● Printed 1st and 2nd-grade level passages about butterfly stages
● Science journals or lined paper
