1.1 Define sociology in your own words.
Answer: Sociology is the study of human society, social relationships, and how
individuals interact within groups. It examines patterns, institutions, and social
processes that shape behaviour and culture.
Example: Studying how peer groups influence adolescent behaviour is a sociological
study.
1.2 Describe education according to your understanding.
Answer: Education is the process through which knowledge, skills, values, and cultural
norms are formally or informally transmitted from one generation to another. It prepares
individuals to participate effectively in society.
Example: A teacher guiding students in science lessons equips them with knowledge
and problem-solving skills.
1.3 Explain what is meant by the following terms and give one example of each:

a) Assimilation (2)
Answer: Assimilation is the process through which individuals or groups adopt the
culture, values, and norms of another dominant group, often losing aspects of their
original identity.
Example: Immigrant children learning the language and customs of their host country in
school.
, b) Society (2)
Answer: Society is a structured group of individuals who share common institutions,
culture, and social relationships, and who interact with one another over time.
Example: The South African society consists of people from diverse cultural
backgrounds interacting under common laws and institutions.
c) Ecology of a school (2)
Answer: The ecology of a school refers to the study of the school environment and how
its physical, social, and cultural elements interact to influence learning and
development.
Example: Class size, teacher-student relationships, and school facilities all affect how
students learn and behave.
d) The activation of constructive and creative forces is one of the functions of the
sociology of education. As a teacher, how can you effectively activate
constructive and creative forces in the classroom? (6)
Answer: Activating constructive and creative forces involves encouraging students to
think critically, solve problems, and express themselves in innovative ways.
Strategies include:
