Dear Student
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also
placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and
the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice
the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these
changes during your studies at Unisa.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS
All honours assignments must be submitted electronically via myUnisa. The
Department of Communication Science requires all students registered for the BA (HONS)
Communications degree to submit their assignments electronically via myUnisa.
The reason for this is twofold:
• As a Communication Science student, you should be able to access and use electronic
media – this is what will be expected of you in the work situation.
• All assignments need to be self-scanned for plagiarism to protect the academic integrity
of both students and the institution. Please note that submitting an assignment on
myUnisa and self-scanning it via Turnitin are two different processes. You must first self-
scan your assignment and then submit the full Turnitin report in Pdf format as your
assignment on myUnisa. Having self-scanned the document on Turnitin does not
mean that you have submitted your assignment for assessment. No digital receipts
are accepted. Follow the exact procedure as posted on myUnisa.
If you experience trouble with or have queries about electronic assignment submissions,
please refer these queries to or send an SMS to 43582 for
assistance. If you experience problems with Turnitin, please direct your queries to
.
• STUDY MATERIAL
All study material is available under Official Study Material on myUnisa and consists of
▪ COM4808/101/2020
▪ CMNHONE/301/2020
• LANGUAGE POLICY
All assignments and examinations should be answered in English.
The Language Policy of Unisa states the following:
3
, 1B All postgraduate qualifications modules will be offered in English only, as from 2017.
4.3.1 The Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) in all postgraduate courses will be in
English.
4.4.3 All formal study material, formative (assignments) and summative (examination)
assessment, as well as other formal tuition activities, will be in English only, whereas
learner support activities may be in the language of the student.
• DECLARATION OF OWN WORK
All work that you submit to the Department of Communication Science must contain a
declaration of own work.
The declaration of own work is available in CMNHONE/301/2020 and a word document on
myUnisa under additional resources.
• TURNITIN
Please read the information below carefully.
All postgraduate students must submit all their work (assignments, portfolios, etc) to the
Turnitin program to scan for plagiarism prior to submitting it via myUnisa. If you fail to do so,
you will receive 0% for the work.
What to submit to Turnitin and what to submit via myUnisa regarding your Turnitin
report.
A tutorial letter / information document will be made available via Additional Resources on
myUnisa. This document will offer specific details regarding the Turnitin submission process
and procedure. Briefly, however, note the following:
• You will have to submit your whole assignment (including all technical matter) to Turnitin.
This means that your submission to Turnitin will include the following (in this order):
o Firstly, a cover page indicating your name, student number, module code, number of the
assignment, unique number of the assignment and assignment theme (if appropriate).
o Thereafter, on the following page, your declaration of own work submitted (see template
under Additional Resources on myUnisa and Tutorial Letter CMNHONE/301).
o Next, on a third separate page, you will start your table of contents.
o Following your table of contents, you will have the body (subject content) of your
assignment, which starts with an introduction and finishes with a conclusion.
o On the last page(s) of your assignment, you will have your list of sources consulted and
Addenda (if appropriate and applicable).
Therefore, your whole assignment, including the cover page, declaration, table of contents
and list of sources, must be submitted to Turnitin. Thereafter, the entire Turnitin report must
be downloaded as a PDF (showing the Originality mark-up, not the GradeMark or
PeerMark view) and submitted to the university via myUnisa. Thus, your entire Turnitin
report IS your assignment.
