Comment – Facebook, Contra
Facebook and social media in general have become a major part of our daily life. Every time we get up,
we check our smartphone and look for notifications and new messages. Not only at the beginning of
the day, the whole day we spent much time looking and interacting with our smartphones. When we
are doing something other than spending time with our phone, social media like Facebook, Instagram
or Snapchat regularly distract us by sending us push messages. We all know that moment, when we’re
trying to learn something for school and then a message comes in or we get a notification that some-
body liked our picture. We directly check our social media accounts and respond immediately. But this
behaviour can have dramatically consequences. According to a recent study, one third of the push up
notifications has a bad influence of us and the power to evoke negative emotions. Not only can this
affect our psychical health, it also shows how we’re addicted to social media. The society at large has
apparently accepted that social media manipulates our behaviour. It should be thought-provoking that
a former Facebook executive is saying that Facebook is ‘ripping society apart’. More and more employ-
ees of the Silicon Valley ban social media on theirs and their family’s smartphone. They all do this in
order to escape from a future world where people are permanently distracted by mobile devices. I’m
not saying that everything in the media landscape is bad, but we, who have experienced the beginning
of the age of mobile communication, should be aware that social media is designed to be addictive.
Not only Facebook, all the big tech companies generate revenue with our data by showing us person-
alized advertising. In order to keep us consumers on their platforms, they had to create a system, that
satisfies our natural demand of getting information. Nevertheless, it’s each individual person’s prob-
lem to stop himself using these services. I would say that we all should rethink our view about social
media in general and question ourselves if we want to live in a world where you don’t have one mo-
ment of not being disturbed.
