Task 1: Project Management
1. Project Initiation
a. The described project defined in the scenario is the startup of a local organic catered lunch business as an additional
service provided by the existing organic market. Further defining the business, it will provide catering with a 25 mile radius
within an hour (60 min) of the customer placing the order. Additionally, the market owner is wanting to start the catering
service within the next 30 days due to increased customer demand to the local vendors for both organic and locally
sourced fresh food options.
b. Three relevant stakeholders, as defined by the scenario are the owner, the customers, and the suppliers of the organic
food supplies (Farmers).
As it is a new additional venture for the market owner, it represents both a huge risk and a huge reward. Should the
catering service be a failure, then not only would the catering business suffer as a loss, but it could also potentially affect
the market itself from either a loss of investment funds, tarnished reputation with the customer base or a lack of faith
from the farmers supplying the organics. Inversely, should the venture prove to be a success, then the owner would reap
the rewards from increased profits, reputation and strengthened partnerships with the local suppliers and/or new
business investors.
From a Customer standpoint, as they are the ones conveying the desire for increased access to local organics and fresh
foods, they would be overall beneficiaries for the project. The catering business is a solution to the “problem” of access
for the customers. Once the meals are delivered in a timely manner, the customer can then enjoy the healthier food
options and support several local businesses in the process.
The farmers supplying the local organics represent a potential stakeholder for venture due to the increased demand for
their produce. They will need to adjust the amount of the produce they grow in order to meet that demand. This can lead
to increased profits for the farmers, but also represent a potential loss should they not be able to meet the demand due to
uncontrollable circumstances or overproduction should the business not prove to be successful.
c. The project initially seems feasible, however quickly reveals several potential pitfalls to make it not readily achievable. The
project’s launch scope is fairly straightforward in that the owner wants to start up the service by providing a free catered
lunch for 10 local area businesses in the next 30 days with an initial budget of $7000. Just weeks before meeting the
launch date, the initial budget has been exceeded by 10% and the set menu for the catered lunches has proven to be
difficult to meet due to lack of available organic goods or alternate suppliers.
2. Project Planning
a. The first milestone for the service is to hire enough staff to support the catering business. This should be completed within
the first week (5-7 days) of the venture in order to ensure there is enough staff and they are properly trained.
The second milestone is to identify the 10 businesses within the 25 mile radius that will suit the catered lunch launch. This
milestone should be completed no later than (NLT) the end of the second week (Day 14).
