A&P 2 Lab 1 - Nervous System

Key terms:

How much does the human brain weighs? Apprx 1,300g-1,400g appx
3 lbs. Males brain is slightly large that female brain however does
not rely on any sign of intelligence. Size of brain is proportional to
the size of the body that is carrying it. Elephant brain is appx 6,000
g and rat’s brain is 2g.

Quickest ability to adapt and made decisions rapidly.

Rostral part- the very forward part of the brain. In lab animal it means towards the nose and in
human subject it is referred to the forehead area. Looking at frontal lobe.

Caudal part- the posterior aspect of the brain. In a lab animal it is referred to the direction of the
tail. In the human it is the back part of the neck or the spinal cord.

3 parts of the brain- cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem.

 ● Cerebrum- He largest part of the brain that consists of 83% of the
brain, It consists of 2 cerebral hemispheres. Right and left cerebral
hemisphere. There are 5 anatomically and functionally distinct lobes.

 ● Gyri/Gyrus- grooves and fold in the brain. IT allows the brain to have
a larger surface area which allows for a larger are to process
information and for the brain to perform a higher level or very
sophisticated job.

 ● Sulci/Sulcus- Shallow grooves separate the gyri.

 ● Central Sulcus- it splits the brain in 2. Purple and red

 ● Longitudinal fissure- separates the left and right hemisphere the
long way.

 Corpus callosum- internally joins the brain by a thick bundle of nerves
at the base of the longitudinal fissure that connects the 2 hemisphere.

 ● Frontal lobe- the forehead. It goes back to the central sulcus part of
the brain. It is from the forehead to the central sulcus. It is responsible
for motor planning, our voluntary mobilty. Also for memory and mood,
emotions, aggression, judgement is all controlled by the frontal lobe.

 ● Precentral gyrus-very specific gurys in the frontal lobe it is the
primary motor area of the brain.

 ● Parietal lobe the cap or top part of the brain itself. It goes back from
the central sulcus back to the parieto-occipital sulcus. There is a left
and a right and it contains a specific gyrus.

 ● Parietal-occipital sulcus- seperates the parietal lobe from the
occipital lobe. Responsible for receiving and interpreting info regarding
the general senses.

 ● Postcentral gyrus- specific gyrus found behind the central lobe. Dark
purple. This is the primary sensory cortex. Primary sensory area of the
brain.

 ● Occipital lobe- green lobe in brain. It is the primary visual cortex of
the brain and it is its primary job. It does not not have a large role in
the senses and behavior. It just serves as the primary visual center of
the brain.

 ● Temporal lobe- yellow in the brain. One on the right and one on the
left. It is reponsible for things like hearing and smell also things like
visual recognition. It also does play a role in learning and memory.

 ● Insula- not visible for the exterior surface. It is the fifth lobe. It is a
small mass of cortex that is deep to the temporal lobe. Not much is
known in the insula as it is hard to access in living subjects. It is deeper
and hard to test, it is responsible for understanding spoken language.

 ● Cerebellum- second region on the brain. It is the second largest part
of the brain. It only makes up 10% of the total volume of the brain. It
contains over 50% of the brain’s neurons. It is located inferior of to the
cerebrum. It has 2 hemispheres like the cerebrum. It is joined and
connected by the vermis. It is responsible for motor coordination. Any
lesion to the cerebellum will result in a very clumsy walking pattern
and clumsy and awkward limb movement called ataxic movement.
Strokes or tumors that affects the cerebellums will result in a poor
coordinated movement. It is also responsible for spatial perception,
proprioceptive feedback from the muscles which means any muscles
are processed in the cerebellum is also been found that the cerebellum
can be related to or help to perform jobs like organizational tasks and
attention to detail. Research has actually shown that people with
attention deficit disorders have a smaller cerebellum than people who
do not have disorder that is shown in the functions of organizational
and time management skills.
