Character portrait of Bridget Jones
Main character in Bridget Jones Diary (books and films)

Meet Bridget Jones, a British woman who in her
thirties and living in London. She is the example of a
modern single woman. She decides to make New
Year’s resolutions. Each day she writes in her diary
where she keeps track of the progress of her goals,
such as losing weight, quitting smoking and drinking
less alcohol. Bridget has blonde hair and is a bit
chubby. She tries to achieve her goals and create a
better life. Moreover, she hopes to find herself a
suitable boyfriend. But that’s not all. Bridget desires
to live a healthier life and find a job that is more fulfilling
In her spare time Bridget likes to hang out with her group of friends. They go out for
dinner and have lots of wine or other alcoholic drinks. She also stays in a lot. At
these nights you’ll find Bridget drinking, smoking, eating and singing along loudly to
Celine Dion’s ‘All by myself’.
Though Bridget has some weaknesses. She is quite clumsy and struggles with achieving her
goals. She often gets herself into awkward situations, which is quite funny. For instance,
when she first meets Mark Darcy. Her mother tried to set her up with him at their annual
Christmas party. As she tries to make conversation, she keeps rumbling on about being so
hangover from yesterday’s party. She makes a fool of herself, but who hasn’t been through
that? Furthermore, Bridget is rather insecure and overestimates her abilities a lot. Besides,
Bridget is a kind and funny woman who loves her friends and family. She always means well.
I sympathize with Bridget Jones because she reminds me of myself sometimes. The fact that
Bridget is imperfect, just like any human being trying to succeed at life, is strongly
emphasized in both the movie and the book. I consider myself imperfect as well and I think
Bridget is very likeable due to her imperfectness.
