Thermodynamics MTX 311
Semester test: March 2014
Examiner
Dr AS Lexmond (University of Pretoria)
Instructions
1 Time: 90 min.
2 Answer all the questions
3 Full marks: 100
4 Neatness makes it easier to identify marks, especially when only part of the question is
correct.
5 Give you solution strategy and the equations before you start filling in numbers
6 You are allowed to take fundamentals of thermodynamics (7th or 8th edition), non-ideal
hand-out and one page, A4, with your own notes (both sides)
Real gases, Gas mixtures and Combustion
A fine chemicals production facility needs carbon monoxide (CO). Instead of storing this very
dangerous compound, it is decided to use incomplete combustion of pentane (C5H12) with oxygen to
produce CO on demand. To achieve incomplete combustion 3g/s of pentane is combusted with 8
g/s of oxygen. The process diagram is given in fig. 1.
