PHL 218 Module Four Short Paper Template

Part One: Analyze Your Chosen Topic

1. Explain how your chosen topic is framed by an ethical framework.

[The topic I chose is “Focus: Social Justice/Human Rights Theme: Indigenous

Rights”. The ethical framework of Indigenous Peoples and Nations vary from place to

place, tribe to tribe but, their overall ethical framework “resonates with the values of

honor, trust, honesty and humility; they reflect commitment to the collective and em-

body a respectful relationship with the land”. (Biin 2021) The Indigenous Peoples

continue to uphold their core values of family and community. Their “process of ethi-

cal thinking begins at birth with storytelling as the primary learning process”. (Biin

2021) It is said in Indigenous culture that “storytelling is used to guide behavior and

solidify belonging and responsibility to the family, community, and larger world.”

(Biin 2021) This cultural influence directly affects their morals and ethics throughout

their entire life.

2. Explain which ethical frameworks have influenced the historical decision making re-

garding your topic.

[Their strong ethical framework starts with “family” being one of the most important

things in their lives. Due to this, their population on the reservations has significantly

increased over the last ten years. Their strong family values and cultural influences

encourage them to have more children so they can share the lifelong customs and tra-

ditions for many more generations. Additionally, the Indigenous Peoples have begun

to speak out about their culture as well as share parts of their culture with others so

bring awareness to some of the issued they face on the reservation. For example, there

quite a few Indigenous Peoples on “TikTok” that share some of the things they do.

She shares what Indigenous Peoples wear, what they eat, how they treat injuries and

illnesses as well as how they dance and celebrate. Their strict ethical framework and

cultural influences can lead to these people on “TikTok” receiving hate and backlash

from their own community members. Some members of the community see the

videos on “TikTok as disrespectful while others see it as helpful to bring awareness to

their culture. On the other side of things, there are individuals on “TikTok” that mock

Indigenous Peoples and make fun of their culture. This can spread hate and miscon-

ception about Indigenous Peoples. In Indigenous cultures “honor, trust, honesty and

humility” are the key values to being a good person.]

a. What evidence do you have for your answer?

[“In the 10 years since 2010, the number of people the Census categorizes as

American Indian and Alaska Native increased from 5.2 million to 9.7 million.”

(NICOA 2021) “In 2020, the American Indian and Alaska Native alone popu-

lation (3.7 million) accounted for 1.1 percent of all people living in the United
