Welcome to Consulting Methods

 Thank you for joining us here for what promises to be a challenging yet rewarding 8
weeks.
 This is the sixth year of this course. Throughout this course you will meet an amazing
group of lecturers. Diversity is key to expanding our perspectives, we strive to create a
cohort with a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds.
 During the coming weeks you will hear from lecturers their perspectives on consulting
and how it might impact clients, employees and the management of consulting firms.
 We will explore trends, such as the transformation of consulting paradigms, as well as
consulting skills such as problem solving, performance in teams, structuring, build
rapport and presenting.

Tutorials

 People are in random groups. Diversity is key. How you work together will decide
what your course outcomes will look like.
 Your consulting team and how you work with each other is an important part of the
course. You need to have quality deliverables by the end of the course, and this is
40% of your grade.
 You have to coordinate with each other yourselves, and appoint a leader as a point of
contact between you and us.
 All groups have to be present in the tutorials.




Grading

 60% individual exam (MPC questions on Flawless Consulting and the lectures and
tutorials)
 25% group assignment paper / case study
 15% group assignment presentation

,  The report will be handed in a five-person group. The presentation is 5’ pitch, also per
group.

For each of these moments of consultation, there are three kinds of skills you need to do the
job.

1. Technical skills: the foundation is some expertise
2. Interpersonal skills: to give ideas, to listen, to give support, to maintain a relationship
(techniques are not enough)
3. Flawless Consulting

 Beyond content: not only skills in providing a program, a process that responds to
client’s needs.
 Also being able to put into words the issues around trust, feelings, responsibility and
your own needs!

The consultant’s assumptions

 Valid data and… what’s happening in the world? (test)
 Read newspapers, know what happens in the world
 Decision making requires free and open choice (it’s your report)
 Effective implementation requires internal commitment
