Ethical standards differ from legal requirements because they are based on human
principles of right and wrong, upheld by health and human services organization’s
ethics committees to treat individuals justly and fairly (Western Governors
University, n.d.-a). Legal requirements, however, are set forth by governmental
law and protect individuals from becoming victims of mistakes, fraud, or abuse of
power (Western Governors University, n.d.-b).
1. Discuss an ethical standard that affects collaborative decision-making for a client to
facilitate a positive outcome.
An ethical standard that affects collaborative decision-making for a client to
facilitate a positive outcome is the ethical standard of autonomy, as it gives the
client the ability to make informed decisions based on appropriate and unbiased
information received from the professional who respects their choice. This way,
the client and professional are assured that the elected care plan will benefit the
client's health. (Western Governors University, n.d.-c).
2. Discuss a legal requirement that affects collaborative decision-making for a client to
facilitate a positive outcome.
A legal requirement that affects collaborative decision-making for a client to
facilitate a positive outcome is for health and human services professionals and
facilities to be accredited and follow regulations. Compliance with said
regulations and laws will provide safe and appropriate care for clients, and the
professionals will have a safe working environment (Western Governors
University, n.d.-b).
3. Describe an ethical principle or ethical dilemma that may arise in the situation
presented in the scenario.
An ethical dilemma that may arise in the scenario is that the client’s children’s
father would call to ask about his children’s health.
a. Explain how you would handle the ethical situation or ethical dilemma.
o I would handle this dilemma from the scenario by letting the father know
that information is confidential. If he is insistent, require proof of his
parental rights after reviewing the local family law with the ethics
department. Finally, ask the client to provide documentation showing that
the father has no legal rights.
B. Discuss two strategies for advocating for diverse clients.
One strategy for advocating for diverse clients is to advocate for their unique
cultural needs. For example, providing a translator for non-English speakers. This
way, there is nothing lost in translation, and the client is confident that their
concerns are addressed.
Another strategy for advocating for diverse clients is to help with questionnaires if
they seem to be struggling with them. Also, ask open-ended questions to get more
information about their current situation. This will make it so that the advocate
