Referee
Questions / criteria Observed Comments

1. Effective communication 1 2 3 4 5 Made consistent eye contact with
officials and communicated to players
his thoughts when the ball was out of
play.

2. Professional appearance 1 2 3 4 5 Wore the correct kit, had a fully
functioning working whistle and the
correct cards.

3. Up to date knowledge of rules 1 2 3 4 5 In some areas he made bad
decisions with challenges which in my
opinion should have been fouls plus
some fouls which were never fouls.

4. Communication with co officials 1 2 3 4 5 Used eye contact and communicated
with officials to make decisions.

5. Fitness 1 2 3 4 5 Started off well but towards the end of
the first half and second half started
to get tired, not keeping up with the
play.

6. Manner 1 2 3 4 5 Poor use of language at times not
allowing players to ask questions and
always responded with “shut up”

7. Correct interpretation of the rules 1 2 3 4 5 Good interpretation of the rules
however some questionable
decisions were made. .

8. Health and safety 1 2 3 4 5 Made sure all players had suitable

, boots and asked for jewelry before
the game. No incidents that occurred
and was a safe even game.

9. Use of common sense 1 2 3 4 5 Used good initiative and overall
managed the game well

10. Dealing with players 1 2 3 4 5 Felt at times he could have managed
the players better by allowing them to
question decisions however
controlling everyone he did well.

11. Dealing with conflict 1 2 3 4 5 Dealt with conflict in the right way
when it was necessary

12. Delivery with manager 1 2 3 4 5 Spoke to both managers during the
game, controlling them very well and
with respect.

Strengths
From our analysis from hudl, it is clear that the referee has good communication with other
officials regarding what the linesman view or thoughts of the situation was. They would
compare then conclude to an agreed decision. He shared thoughts with the managers and
conducted them very well respectfully. They arrived in the correct equipment and gear,
managing the players safety before the game by asking various questions about jewelry and
checking players studs, this states that he is a good role model to others. He dealt with
conflict in the right way when it was necessary as he took priority in the players wealthfare,
then once he was alright carried on with the rules of the game.

Weaknesses
These are my opinions on areas for the referee to improve on. Communication with players
could have been dealt with more maturely respecting players questioning his decisions as
moving forward he will be respected by the players resulting in less minor arguments on the
pitch. His fitness levels will be needed to improve as it was clear he was struggling towards
the end of each half keeping up with the fast play and multiple turnovers. In the future his
fitness levels will help him keep up with plays noticing further potential infringements and will
concentrate on the game more rather than thinking how tired he is. To improve his
interpretation of the rules he can ask and speak to other experienced officials learning off
them and then they can complete more qualifications.
