Section A: Reflection
The first semester of each year always brings on new challenges and aspects when
considering the modules, a student selects. It is exciting yet at the same time
frightening as one does not know what to expect and which challenges one will have
to face within these modules.
ENG2603 for me personally, was a quite difficult module. The reason for me saying
that it was challenging is the fact that at times it was difficult for me to interpret
exactly what was needed in the assignments and looking at the novels.
Nevertheless, with some perseverance and discipline I managed to interpret from the
novel into my own words, which for me was a highlight as I felt some sense of “pride”
for being able to compile an essay of good standard. When reading the novel and
looking at the assignment I was at first unsure of what was expected of me and how
to approach the essay. After reading the questions multiple times I was clear on what
to do and could then deliver my assignment with confidence.
The novels` Nervous Conditions and A raisin in the sun were both enjoyable and
eye-opening in the sense of how these families lived and also faced their own
insecurities and challenges. I found it interesting and I enjoyed reading the novels. I
also used audio books as a resource to assist me in understanding the novel fully,
and for me that was the most enjoyable part of writing the essays. I found that
reading the novel and listening to it helped me to understand the novel in a greater
way.
This module also helped me to explore different representations of race, gender and
“Identity crisis” as it stated in one of our assignments. Being placed in Southern
African settings also made me think that it is in our country itself that these
challenges face different families, cultures and genders each day. It was eye
opening and made me feel a sense of appreciation toward what I have.
ENG2603 has helped me to be more vigilant when reading texts and to understand
exactly what is asked of me. Many times one can read only half of what is asked and
that results in poor writing and inconsistent work being handed in. When reading a
novel one must not only scan through the text, but try to place one-self in the shoes
of the narrator or characters in order to feel, understand and fully grasp what is being
said.
