What is Memory?
Human Memory - The process by which we retain information about
events that have happened in the past.
Cognitive Psychology
Psychologists believe that human behaviour can be explained if we
understand the mental processes.
This means that it is the study of how people learn, structure, store and
use their knowledge - ultimately how people think.
We compare the mind to a computer:
Input -> Processing -> Output

Why is Memory Important?
Studies of brain damaged patients have shown that memory is essential
for learning. Without a memory, no learning can take place.
Memory is used to remember how to do things - ie. catch a bus, riding a
bike. It’s important for talking to friends and remembering places.
Without a memory, we would not be humans.
Short Term Memory
Information that we process and recall instantly is typically stored in our
short term memory. It stores all of the information that we are currently
aware of.
