My name is Megan Nearn, and I will be showing you the diverse types of jobs available in the
travel and tourism industry. I will show you multiple types of jobs and give you in-depth
information about each job and what you should expect.
These are some examples of the type of jobs I will include in this career booklet: transport,
accommodation, tour operations, travel agents, visitor attractions and guiding and information
services. All these types of jobs are crucial in order to keep the travel and tourism industry
alive.


Jobs in transport
Train driver
A train driver drives trains long or short distances, for example, cross-country train drivers
travel long distances whereas west midlands train drivers only travel short distances. They are
in control of the train and its speed and need to keep all the passengers onboard safe.
The roles and responsibilities of a train driver
There are many roles and responsibilities that come with this job role, to keep passengers safe
and maintain a smooth journey. These are some of the roles and responsibilities that you will

Most train drivers earn between £20,000 and £30,000 per year, however once qualified and
working in this industry for a while your salary should rise to between £35,000 and £55,000.
You will also be given free or reduced rail travel across the country. You will be working around
35 hours per week and depending on what company you are working for you may be working

essential to keep passengers safe and make sure the plane is running smoothly, without any

o Make sure all safety systems are working correctly
o Communicate with air traffic before, during and after the flight

Entry requirements and qualifications
You will need to have an airline transport pilot license (ATPL), this qualification is known as a
‘frozen ATPL’ and you will need to complete 1,500 hours of flight time for it to become
