Unit 9 “Computer Networks”
Richard Okon Ochei | S229864
,P1 - Describe the types of networks available and how
they relate to network standards and protocols
Local Area Network
- A Local Area Network covers a small area but is
effective in places like offices and schools. The
accessibility of this network is private and stays
within the organization.
- A Local Area Network can be wired or wireless
and is relatively cheap to set up which is why it is
commonly used. The protocol and standard used
in this network is Ethernet 802.3. Ring, Bus and
Star are the three topologies which are generally
used for a LAN network.
, Personal Area Network
• A Personal Area Network can only cover a small
area and can only be accessed if the device is a
couple meters away. This network is structured
for a single person, communicating through
telephone or computer devices. This network
can be public accessed or private.
• This network is cheap to set up as it only covers a
small area. This network type is normally
connected wirelessly but can be connected by
cable if needed. The protocols and standards
used by PAN are Bluetooth and 802.11 (known as
Wi-Fi). A PAN can use a Star topology to
complete the network.
