relations
Western capitalist democracies the USA and Britain
 The cornerstone of capitalist thinking was the right of the individual to
liberty this meant that every citizen should have equal opportunities
but not necessarily equal outcomes
 This was also based on free market economics that enabled the
exchange of goods with minimal government intervention
 Elections were free and fair

The USSR and communism
 Karl Marx founded communism, and he believed that capitalism led to
the exploitation of the proletariat
 Lenin's communism was a dictatorship of the proletariat
 When Stalin was elected, he modified Lenin's communism to suit his
own ends and created a cult of personality which promoted him as the
infallible interpreter of the communist ideology



Tensions at Yalta
 At the beginning of 1945 the “marriage of convenience” or the grand
alliance was formed with Britain, the USSR and the USA
 There were already tensions at Yalta due to soviets freeing the eastern
European countries thanks to the 2nd front in France and tending to
keep those countries occupied



The Yalta conference 4-11th Feb 1945
 This conference was the high point of the grand alliance as its
geographical location have great significance
 Rosevelt wanted: a lasting post war settlement, but that this
settlement should reflect the American principles of democracy,
Roosevelt was committed to work with Stalin as he believed that they
