UNIT 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social care

P5. Describe how anti discriminatory practice is promoted in health and social care
settings.

In the healthcare setting, we will encounter
a lot of different service users. They may differ in
terms of age, sex, belief, religion, culture and many
more. Our duty as a health care provider is to be
able to treat them equally despite their diversity
and include them into society without any
discrimination called Anti-Discriminatory Practice.

But before we continue to Anti-Discriminatory
Practice, let us first define what Discrimination is.
Discrimination is the act of treating someone differently from others. This act happens
around the world and not just in the healthcare setting and it gives negative effects to people.
Discrimination may come in many forms such as stereotyping, prejudice, avoiding someone
because of their color or religion etc.

In relation to healthcare, Discrimination affects treatment or recovery of the service users.
This may affect them in a lot of ways may it be Physically, Emotionally, Mentally and
Socially. That is why Anti-Discriminatory Practice is essential. It helps prevent any form of
discrimination and this practice helps make our society a better place. It also helps our
patient build trust and confidence with the healthcare institution.

As future healthcare providers, we must understand that discrimination in this setting can
affect our patients terribly for they are in a state where their well being is not intact. They are
sensitive and susceptible to different things. Understanding and being aware of diversity,
equality and inclusion can help prevent discrimination and offer better service to service
users.

By saying so, Anti- Discriminatory is very well promoted in health care settings through
various ways such as:

1. By actively challenging the unfair discrimination.

Unfair discrimination means being treated unfairly in comparison to somebody else.
It is a type of discrimination that happens wherever we may be. Many people might have
even experienced this at their workplace, school or at a healthcare institute. Experiences
such as unfair treatment due to favouritism in age, gender, race, disability, ethnicity, belief,
culture and many more. Discrimination among these are very serious and unlawful. It may
even also have serious effects on the person financially, mentally, emotionally and
physically. Standing up to discrimination is not an easy thing to do. So, here are some ways
to actively challenging it:

Prior to studying in London, I have first studied Nursing in my home country. However, since I need to move in the UK, I couldn\'t finish my University degree. From then on, I started studying Level 2 Health and Social care where I got a A* and proceeded on taking Level 3 Health and Social care for 2 years where I received D*D*D*. Currently, I am studying Adult nursing.
